Caring for a parent from another city: a checklist

Keep your parent in charge while you stay informed, without daily check-up calls.

Many of us look after parents who live in another city. The aim is to stay informed without taking over.

Ask first, then set it up together

Talk to your parent before you add or share anything. Their consent comes first, and they are more likely to use something they chose.

Keep one clear record

Gather current prescriptions, allergies and the doctor's name in one place, so anyone helping sees the same thing.

Agree what you will be told about

Decide together: a missed dose, a refill running out, a follow-up due. Fewer, more useful alerts are easier to live with than many.

Share only what a doctor needs, only for as long as needed

When a specialist or a surgeon needs history, share that part with an end date, rather than forwarding everything.

Keep an emergency card ready

Allergies, current medicines and who to call, on one screen that family can reach quickly.
